Demolish the Mental Roadblocks Sabotaging Your Biggest Dreams

First, allow me to set the stage…

Imagine that you are driving along and you come across a giant tree on the road that is blocking the entire road. 

That giant tree is a roadblock that is keeping you from your destination. 

If you have a long-held Big Hairy Audacious Dream (BHAD) but you find yourself no closer to achieving it than you were 6 months or a year ago, there are mental roadblocks that are keeping you from achieving your BHAD.   

Mental roadblocks are the negative thoughts, self-doubts, and limiting beliefs that are holding you back and preventing you from taking action. 

Mental roadblocks can be paralyzing.

They can sap your motivation, crush your confidence, and make you afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

And over time, constantly giving in to these mental roadblocks can become a self-fulfilling prophecy - you never take action, so you never achieve your goals.

If you don’t break through the mental barriers – the self-sabotage, the negative thoughts, self-doubts, and limiting beliefs – it is highly unlikely that you will be able to muster up the mental fortitude, willpower, and motivation to achieve your BHAD. At some point,  you will probably throw up your hands in despair and quit pursuing your Big Dream. (I did four years in a row.) 

That’s a recipe for unhappiness, dissatisfaction, and deathbed regrets (why didn’t I go for my Big Dream when I had the chance?)

There are 4 ways that people typically try to remove the obstacles that stand in the way of their Big Dreams. 

1️⃣ Some people try to bulldoze their way through mental roadblocks through sheer willpower.  That’s like trying to push the giant tree out of the way using your own strength. 

2️⃣ Some people give up on their dream as soon as they hit an obstacle or setback. That’s like turning around and going home because you ran into a roadblock.

3️⃣ Some people do nothing because they don’t know what to do. That’s like sitting in your car waiting for someone to come and remove the roadblock but you didn’t call for help.

4️⃣ Some people decide that they don’t know enough. That’s like reading a book about how to clear a tree off the road.  

These approaches don’t work because they do nothing to actually clear away the mental roadblocks.

The most effective way to clear away roadblocks is to use the right tool.  

In the case of a giant tree blocking the road, the right tool would be a chainsaw. 

In the case of clearing away the roadblocks that are standing between you and your BHAD, the right tool is mental fitness training.

All of our mental roadblocks are generated by a part of our brain called the Survival brain. It is the source of all our negative self-talk, negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, and fear, and limiting beliefs. It generates self-doubt, insecurity, and Imposter Syndrome. It is constantly sabotaging us. It is the home of our worst enemy, our Inner Critic.

Goal setting and achieving requires a different part of our brain. 

In the Positive Intelligence mental fitness program, we call this part of the brain the Sage brain.  This is the home of our inner best friend, our inner mentor, inner wisdom. This part of our brain is the source of all positive emotions including compassion, empathy, curiosity, and creativity, as well as action-orientation, innovativeness, resilience, and decisiveness … all of which are essential if we want to achieve our Big Dreams. 

The problem is that by default, our Survival brain does most of our thinking for us. In other words, our Survival brain is activated most of the time.  We are hard-wired for negativity as a survival strategy, 

The brain is a muscle so the parts of the brain that are activated the most are the strongest.

Because our Survival brain is on most of the time, our Sage brain doesn’t get activated and isn’t very strong. 

Imagine if you did bicep curls on only one arm. That bicep would be strong. The other bicep would be weak. 

Mental fitness training using the Positive Intelligence three-step framework strengthens the muscles in the Sage part of the brain, weakens the muscles in the Survival brain, and enables us to consciously control which part of our brain is doing our thinking for us.
